Ways To Prepare For Storm Season

Winter Storm Season Is Coming.

As we all know, storms have a great capacity to wreak havoc on our properties. Depending on the severity of the storm, your roof can be torn off in weak spots, allowing water to seep into the building and cause heavy water damage. The roof can also be blown off entirely! Another way your roof can be wrecked is by water accumulation–water accumulates on top of the roof during and after the storm. The water stays up top over time and weakens your roof by way of rotting and rusting. Storms are devastating, period.

You will want to make sure that you are as prepared as possible for when it starts. Below are a few preventative measures you can take to bolster your roof:

  1. Schedule a professional roofing inspection.

A good roofing inspector will check the roof for any compromises to structural integrity. They will check your gutters to see if they are clear of debris and connected properly, to ensure that water flows through the correct path away from the property. They will also check the membrane of the roof for any signs of damage like rips, tears, and punctures. They will also check to make sure that the flashings are attached properly and sealed tightly, to prevent any water from seeping through.

  1. Install protective material over your roof.

Depending on how bad the storm/hurricane season gets in your area, you might want to look into buying a high-quality protective roof covering (avoid the low-quality stuff at all costs!) that you can install to protect your roof. Unless you are an expert at installing these, always call a professional to properly install these for you. If the material is not installed properly, your roof will still get damaged and you will be more out of pocket than you would have been by calling in the professional. For product examples, look into roof sheets or plywood that has been treated with a liquid latex sealer (or any other type of good quality water-resistant substance).

  1. Have a look at your home-owner’s insurance policy.

Double check the fine print to see what your insurance actually covers. There might be certain kinds of damages that are not covered under your policy. If you need thorough storm damage coverage, contact your insurance provider to discuss your options. In addition, write a list of your possessions and take pictures/video recordings of them. Then upload that information online as a back-up to the hard copy you have with you. In case anything disastrous happens and/or you lose the hard copy, you can always retrieve the information from an online cloud storage to give to your insurance company.
